Experience traditional craft techniques still alive in Tokyo: Edo kiriko and Edo komon

There are currently about forty different traditional crafts in Tokyo. This tour will visit two of the most representative traditions – Edo kiriko (cut glass) and Edo komon (dyeing) – both of which shine at being delicate and meticulous. Recently, modern designs and products that are unique to Tokyo are also being produced using these techniques.

●Overview: Experience the making of original Edo kiriko glass. (choose a glass and cut a traditional Edo kiriko pattern) ●Duration: 1.5h Founded in 1899, Hirota Glass is one of the oldest glass manufacturers in Tokyo. Leveraging priceless design materials that have been handed down since the company's founding, Hirota Glass continues to produce works that fit with modern interiors. The manufacturer still uses traditional manufacturing methods such as Edo kiriko and glass blowing that have been handed down from generation to generation. You can enjoy shopping at their retail store as well as experience creating your very own Edo kiriko.

Tomita Dyeing Workshop

●Overview: Edo komon dyeing experience (bring a T-shirt or bag and choose a pattern from the provided) or experience makimg Edo sarasa scarves.  ●Duration: 1.5h for Edo komon dyeing experience, 4h for Edo scarve making (separate plan with lunch provided) Tomita Dyeing Workshop, founded in 1914, is a dyeing studio that specializes in the dyeing techniques of Edo komon and Edo sarasa. As many as 120,000 pieces of Ise katagami (traditional paper stencils) used for Edo komon and Edo sarasa are collected here, with many modern designs among the stencils. Exclusively for Onland customers, you can experience the making of Edo Sarasa scarves or dye their own bags and T-shirts using the stencils.
