  • ①A journey to meet the stories created by the 1,000 years of iron making. The Oku-Izumo Yasugi region have developed through "tatara" iron making. Here is a journey to retrace the story and cultural assets of the Japan Heritage “Land of Izumo Chronicle” based on the scattered traditional sites, and to draw your own future through the interaction with people who are carrying on the tradition to this day.
  • ②Special limited public viewing of the “Tamahagane Engi”, a designated cultural property of Yasugi City. A special limited public viewing of the historical picture scroll “Tamahagane Engi” is offered, a story depicting the tatara iron making and is also recognized in the Japan Heritage “Land of Izumo, Tatara Chronicle - A Thousand Years of Iron-”. While viewing this large work, which is approximately 55 meters long, visitors can learn and deepen their understanding of the 1400-year history of tatara iron making.
  • ③Interaction with a real blacksmith. Experience being an apprentice to Hironari Koto, a blacksmith at Kajikobo Hiromitsu. The workshop has been practicing tatara iron smelting and blacksmithing since the Edo period and continues to carry on the traditions of Izumo ironworking to this day. Unlike regular iron smelting experiences or studio tours, this experience uses the real blacksmith's workshop and tools. You will enjoy the time spent looking back on your past and future while learning about the thoughts and struggles of the blacksmiths who have inherited the history and are putting it to use in the present. 
  • ④A story to be discovered by an interactive tour. Here is an interactive tour to visit people and deepen the understanding of the myths and birthplace, and to learn about the history, present and future of tatara iron making, which has developed as a sustainable industry where nature and people coexist. This new type of tour allows you to experience the myths and history of the area while praying at Kanayago Shrine, which enshrines the god of ironmaking, and to experience the story of tatara ironmaking with all your senses through a conversation with the last lumberjack at Sugaya Tatara Sannai. Learn about what it was like when tatara ironmaking was carried out.

Wako Museum

  • From the descent of the Kanayago God to the modern iron making of this region, experience the historical transition through the 55m-long archival picture scroll of Tatara iron making which is not usually open to the public.

Oku-izumo Tatara and Sword Museum

  • Learn about tatara iron making, which continues to this day, at the Oku-izumo Tatara and Sword Museum, and watch a sword-fighting performance by Ito Shuzo Sensei. Upon request, try drawing a sword if you wish.

Dinner

  • KANUKA PARK
  • Surrounded by pure waters and lush greenery, a place where fireflies and storks dance in harmony with nature. In Unnan City, wild boar raised in this pristine environment offers a taste like no other — rich, intense, and unforgettable.Enjoy wild game cuisine made from local resources made by Shunji Kanuka, a chef from outside of the prefecture who trained in Ginza, Tokyo and Yokohama. After dinner, there will be a dialogue session looking back on the first day and reviews for the second day.

Tanabeke Dozougun

  • Visit Yoshida-cho, the home of the Tanabe family, who were the head of the ironworks for the Matsue domain. Take a stroll around the company town, which is full of atmosphere that evokes memories of the past.

Sugaya Tatara Sannai

  • Visit Sugaya Tatara Sannai, where the only remaining high-status buildings and village from the time of the founding of tatara ironworks (having been the inspiration for a famous anime), can be found. Through a conversation with the last lumberjack, “Asahi Mitsuo”, you can feel the breath of the town that once flourished thanks to tatara iron making.

  • Okuizumo Budoen (winery) is planned

  • You can also use your free time after lunch to visit the Adachi Museum of Art, which is famous for its beautiful Japanese garden. (This is not included in the tour)

  • During dinner, a dialogue session will be held with Mr. Shusuke Koto from Kaji Kobo Hiromitsu.

  • Visit Kanayago Shrine, a tangible cultural property designated by Shimane Prefecture that attracts the faith of various people involved with iron. Chief priest Abe will explain the history of the shrine and as we will receive a prayer.

Kaji Kobo Hiromitsu

  • Make a candle holder under the special tutelage of Hironari Koto, a blacksmith and active swordsmith. Get a special chance to hear the thoughts of the swordsmith in a dialogue session.

Day3 Kaji Kobo Hiromitsu

Move on to Kaji Kobo Hiromitsu and make a candlestick under the special tutelage of Hironari Koto, a blacksmith and active swordsmith. Get a special chance to hear the thoughts of the swordsmith in a dialogue session. After the closing session, we will head off to the airport. Each participant's work will be finished by Kaji Kobo Hiromitsu and then carefully delivered to their homes.
